Signs of a Spider Infestation that Shouldn’t Be Ignored

There’s just something about spiders that seems to make almost everyone's skin crawl. Whether it is a general distaste for them or a full-blown phobia, we can all agree we don’t want these eight-legged pests invading our homes. While most of the over 54 species found in the Carolinas aren’t poisonous, spiders of any sort inside your house are still unwelcome guests. If you’re concerned you may have a spider infestation, contact a professional exterminator to take a look.

Spider Infestation Indicators

  • Webs are a clear sign that spiders are present in your home. Depending on the species, the web could be large, small, orbital, organized, or haphazard-looking. Black widows, for example, create messy web “dens” in tucked-away spaces to trap their prey.
  • Egg sacs are small and look like a silk-wrapped ball, but seeing just one around your home could mean that hundreds of baby spiders are about to hatch and scatter throughout the area.
  • Excessive amounts of flying insects, like flies, moths, and mosquitoes, might indicate that spiders are also present nearby since flying insects provide a steady source of food.
  • Seeing actual spiders and other pests is, of course, the clearest way to be sure you have a pest control problem. Some spiders naturally prefer dry cool areas while others prefer dark, moist surroundings, but either way, if you see one in your home, chances are he’s comfortable right where he is.

Quick Tips to Discourage Spiders from Invading your Home

  • Keep outdoor lights turned off. While spiders aren’t actually attracted to light, the insects they like to eat are. Since these predatory pests are always on the hunt for a food source, turning off outdoor lights is an easy way to eliminate what would otherwise be an illuminated spider buffet.
  • Make sure both the inside and outside of your home stay tidy and clean. Spiders love to hide in clutter, stacks of boxes, areas that aren’t regularly vacuumed, and unkempt vegetation around a home’s exterior. Keeping these areas clean and clear will help with spider control.
  • Seal any cracks in your home’s exterior. Like many pests, spiders can sneak into any hole, gap, or crevice in doors and windows, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and crawl spaces since they prefer damp areas. If they don’t have a clear way to enter, they’ll stay outside where they belong.
  • Remove any spider webs as soon as they appear. Sometimes we don't notice when webs collect in the corners of rooms, but simply sweeping them down with a broom can help eliminate spiders in your home.

If you’ve noticed any of the indicators above, or if you just want to be sure you don’t have any unwanted arachnids creeping around your home, it’s best to contact the professionals at Thompson Brothers Exterminating and Waterproofing. Sharon P, Waterproofing & Repair

We had extensive water intrusion that our inspector did not see. Thompson Brothers had to engage in grading, extensive digging, reinstallation of French drains, and install a new drainage field. The work was excellent. All personnel is polite, on time, and very professional. Highly recommend.
