Why do Ants Come Inside?

Ants are resilient insects. They can sense changes in the weather and prepare for heavy rain by digging deep nests or relocating. They aren't completely "weather-proof," though, and still prefer cooler areas in summer and warmer ones in winter. Your home probably ticks those boxes. Additionally, leftover breadcrumbs or water drops in the sink can make a great meal for ants. The only other thing they need to thrive in your home is easy access.

Types of ants

There are currently over 14,000 known ant species in the world, of which about 700 are found in the United States. But fear not, "only" 25 of those are commonly found inside homes.

In the Carolinas, the ants most commonly seen are:

  • Argentine ants: These ants are relatively small and brown in color. Although they can be found anywhere in your home, they are most attracted to kitchens and bathrooms, where they have easy access to food and water. They are known for forming large colonies.
  • Odorous house ants: Although small and dark, these ants can be quite unpleasant. They often invade kitchens, where they look for an easy meal. When crushed, they leave behind an unpleasant odor. Hence the name.
  • Little black ants: Another type of small, dark ants that is often found indoors, scavenging for food. Although they don't leave behind an unpleasant odor, they can be just as unpleasant to deal with.
  • Carpenter ants: These larger, usually black or dark brown, ants are often found in and around your home. Especially near wood, such as window frames, foundations, and wooden beams, they can cause serious damage, excavating wood for their nests.
  • Fire ants: Unfortunately, most of us will be familiar with these unpleasant, reddish-brown ants. Thankfully, they live outdoors. Regardless, they can be a nuisance as they can leave painful stings.

The good news? Thompson Brothers Exterminating and Waterproofing can help you safely get rid of these various types of ants, and prevent them from coming back!

indoor Ant extermination & prevention

At Thompson Brothers, pest extermination and prevention go hand in hand. Our first step for any treatment plan includes a thorough inspection of your property. During this inspection, we may uncover access points, such as unsealed or cracked window frames. Reducing the number of entryways for pests is a great first step in ant treatment and prevention.

If ants are already inside, we'll also offer an ant extermination plan to safely eliminate ants. For indoor ants, this usually means baiting, a form of ant control in which bait is placed for ants to take back to their colony and extinguish it.

fire Ant Treatment

Fire ants prefer warm climates, making the Carolinas a perfect oasis for them. They can both bite and sting, often in that order, using their mouth to anchor themselves and then deliver the sting. The venom that gets injected during this sting can cause a painful, burning, and/or itchy reaction. Needless to say, fire ants don't mix well with outdoor fun and can pose a threat to wildlife.

The effective extermination of fire ants involves three steps:

  1. Baiting—leaving out bait products for foraging ants that will then return the bait to the colony, killing it from the inside out
  2. Mound drenching—using a liquid insecticide to soak the ant mound, eliminating all fire ants inside
  3. Maintenance—performing regular inspections and treatments to prevent new ant infestations from happening

Sharon P, Waterproofing & Repair

We had extensive water intrusion that our inspector did not see. Thompson Brothers had to engage in grading, extensive digging, reinstallation of French drains, and install a new drainage field. The work was excellent. All personnel is polite, on time, and very professional. Highly recommend.
