How to Rid your Home of Roaches for a Fresh Start of 2022

How to Rid your Home of Roaches for a Fresh Start of 2022

As the holiday season comes to an end, most of us are preparing to decorate, entertain, and make our homes warm and cozy for winter. But as you’re busy decking the halls, you might notice some unwanted intruders infesting your walls. Cockroaches also think there’s no place like home for the holidays, and they love nothing more than a warm, inviting space like your home to take up residency in during the cold winter months. If you don’t want to spend the season with these icky, invasive pests, there are several ways to make sure your home is roach-free in 2022.

Why Roaches are Especially Problematic

An unwanted insect of any sort in your home can be enough to make your skin crawl, but roaches are especially cringe-worthy, and for good reason. They roamed the earth before t-rexes, they can run up to 3mph, and there are over 70 species of roaches found in the U.S. alone. Cockroaches are alarmingly resilient, can carry all sorts of bacteria and aggravating pathogens, and can multiply rapidly. In short, if you see a roach in your home, you’ll need to find ways to get him and his friends out as soon as possible.

Roach Control Maintenance

How cockRoaches Get in Your House

Much like human holiday guests, cockroaches are attracted to anything they can drink or eat. Things like dirty dishes in a sink, crumbs on the counter, or pet food can be enough of a temptation for a roach to come in and have a holiday feast from your leftovers!

Still have roaches even if your home is spotless? Regardless of any efforts you may make to stay tidy, cockroaches can sneak into the smallest crack or opening in your home, and even if you don’t have anything readily available for them to snack on, they’re able to go a month without any food at all. They can stick around in the cozy shelter your home provides until they eventually find a food source, but it’s best to kick them out as soon as you discover you have a roach problem.

How to Get Rid of Roaches in your House

There are several steps you can take right away to begin to rid your home of cockroaches. Some proactive measures you can take are:

  • making sure you don’t have any standing water in your gutters, or in flower pots or other areas around your home exterior
  • vacuuming or sweeping daily to get rid of any crumbs or other debris
  • cleaning under all kitchen appliances, especially the refrigerator
  • keeping pet bowls empty or covered when not in use
  • caulking all entry points where insects could sneak in

We had extensive water intrusion that our inspector did not see. Thompson Brothers had to engage in grading, extensive digging, reinstallation of French drains, and install a new drainage field. The work was excellent. All personnel is polite, on time, and very professional. Highly recommend.
