Professional Tick Control & Treatment

Ticks need very little to settle into a Carolina yard. Tall grass, leaf litter, shady edges and inviting hosts like deer, rodents and the family dog are plenty. And once they're there, suddenly afternoons and evenings in the backyard end with a tick check. If you're looking for tick control near you, Thompson Brothers provides tick treatment for homes in Spartanburg, Greenville and across Upstate SC and Western North Carolina. We find where ticks are living on your property, treat those areas, and help make your yard less inviting to them.

Types of Ticks in the Carolinas

Several tick species live in Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina. These are the ones homeowners and pet owners run into most:

  • Lone Star Tick: The tick collected most often in South Carolina. Adult females have a single white spot on the back. Every life stage bites people, and the tiny larvae (often called seed ticks) turn up in large numbers in the fall. Lone star ticks are linked to ehrlichiosis and to alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy to red meat.
  • American Dog Tick: Common along wooded paths, overgrown lots and shrubby areas, especially in the Piedmont. Adults feed on dogs and people from spring through fall, and this species can carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
  • Blacklegged (Deer) Tick: Found in lower numbers across South Carolina, but it is the tick that spreads Lyme disease. Adults stay active in late fall, winter and early spring on days above freezing, so tick season doesn't fully end when summer does.
  • Brown Dog Tick: Feeds almost entirely on dogs and can live indoors, laying eggs in cracks along foundations, in kennels and inside homes. It can stay active all year.

Ticks can be hard to tell apart once they're on a pet or a person. If you're not sure what you've found, send us a picture or give us a call, and we'll help you figure out which tick you're dealing with.

How Do I Know If I Have Ticks in My Yard?

Ticks are small and don't leave nests or mounds behind, so most people learn they have a problem from the ticks themselves. Watch for these signs:

  • Ticks on your pets: Finding ticks on your dog or cat after time in the yard is the most common early warning.
  • Ticks on your family: Ticks picked up after yard work or play on your property might mean you have a tick problem.
  • Inviting habitats: Tall grass and weeds, brush piles, leaf litter and lawns that run right up to the woods offer ticks the shade and moisture they need to survive.
  • Presence of wildlife: Deer, rodents and other animals may carry ticks onto your property and drop them as they go.

Tips for keeping ticks away:

Ticks dry out easily, so they like to stay in shaded, damp spots and climb grass, weeds and shrubs to wait for a host to brush past. The edges of a yard where your lawn meets woods or brush usually hold the most. These few tips might make your property less welcoming:

  • Keep grass mowed and weeds trimmed.
  • Rake up leaf litter and clear brush and wooded debris.
  • Leave a maintained strip between your lawn and wooded areas.
  • Work with your veterinarian on a tick prevention plan for your pets.

How Thompson Brothers Treats Ticks

Tick treatment works best when it's aimed at the places ticks actually live on your property. When you call our tick exterminators, we start with an inspection. Our technician walks your property, looks for tick activity and finds the shaded, overgrown areas where ticks like to live. Then we treat the areas where ticks are most likely to be, including lawn edges, shrub beds and the shady spots where your family and pets spend time. We'll also help point out certain conditions that might be drawing ticks in and recommend helpful solutions. Our technicians tailor their treatment to fit what's happening in your yard. We'll also be sure to point out any other pest issues we may notice. If mosquitoes are a problem, take a look at our mosquito control services.

Do I Need Recurring Tick Treatments?

For most yards with steady tick activity, yes. Ticks in the Carolinas are most active from spring through fall, and blacklegged ticks remain active through milder winter days. Recurring treatments through tick season keep protection in place as earlier applications wear off and new ticks are carried in. Regular visits also give our technicians a chance to catch changes on your property early. Learn more about our pest control maintenance plans.
