Where do Termites Go in Winter?

Where do Termites Go in Winter?

As the winter months approach, we’re often asked if there is an actual active “termite season” versus a more dormant period later in the year. Unfortunately, termites are active year round, especially in the Southeast.

When is Termite Season?

The time of year when you might see more evidence of termites is between March and September, when termites tend to swarm and leave behind discarded wings and droppings. But in the Southeast, this period of activity can extend into the winter months if temperatures stay moderate. So, to answer the question we are often asked, “Where do bugs go in winter?” Our short answer is: no matter what termite species exists in your home, if termites can find a warm, temperature-regulated spot (like a basement), then they will stay active all winter long. A termite infestation can happen in your home no matter what time of year it is.

What does termite damage look like?

Because termites stay active all year round, especially in our area, it’s important that you be on the lookout for the signs of termite damage.

These signs include:

  • cracked or buckling ceilings or walls
  • signs of water damage
  • maze-like designs in wooden structures
  • mud tunnels in home foundations
  • actual swarms of termites

How do I protect my home from termites?

If you notice any signs of termite damage in your home, or if you just want the peace of mind of having an evaluation, our expert Thompson Brothers technicians will provide a comprehensive, free termite inspection of your home.

During this inspection, we’ll examine all of the areas of your home where termites may live, and depending on the season, we’ll search each of the hidden places and spaces where termites like to congregate for that time of year.

Should we uncover any evidence of termites, we’ll inspect the surrounding area to ensure that we identify any and all damage. If we discover an infestation (but there is no wood damage), we will conduct a full extermination to treat the problem. If there is termite wood damage, our full-service team of experienced contractors can handle any kind of termite wood repair needed.

What Our Customers Say

Sharon P, Waterproofing & Repair

We had extensive water intrusion that our inspector did not see. Thompson Brothers had to engage in grading, extensive digging, reinstallation of French drains, and install a new drainage field. The work was excellent. All personnel is polite, on time, and very professional. Highly recommend.
