Kicking Ants Out of Your Home

Kicking Ants Out of Your Home

Seeing ants inside your home is never a good thing — and while ants can technically invade any time of year, they become especially active in the spring and summer months. An infestation can be hard to control because of the persistent nature of these particular pests, but there are several ways to kick ants out for good once you realize you may have a problem.

How To Identify an Ant Problem

The most obvious way to tell if you have an ant problem is to actually see ants crawling around areas of your home — but it may not be that straightforward. Other clues you may have an ant infestation are:

  • small trails of sawdust around the inside or outside of your home (left by carpenter ants)
  • crumbling wooden structures on or around your home
  • piles of dirt around your home or in your basement
  • rustling noises in your walls
  • small discarded wings that are translucent brown

If you see any of these signs in your house, it’s time to take action to get rid of these small-but-aggressive pests.

Ways to Prevent an Infestation

Whether you’ve already seen ants around your home and you want to get rid of them, or if you just want to be proactive to keep ants away in general, there are several things you can do immediately to deter ants.

  • Eliminate any exposed food source by cleaning kitchen spills, vacuuming crumbs, and removing clutter.
  • Store all food in sealed containers.
  • Seal off any cracks or entrances in your home to ensure ants can’t get in from outside.
  • Pour soapy boiling water on exterior anthills.
  • Ensure pet food isn’t easily accessible or kept on the floor when pets aren’t eating.

The Difference between an Ant and a Termite

If you see an ant in your home, you may be concerned that it could also potentially be a termite. Here’s how to tell the difference:

Ants:

  • Have slim waists and bent antennae
  • Have longer legs
  • In winged ants, front wings are longer than back wings

Termites:

  • Have thicker waists and straight antennae
  • Have shorter legs
  • In winged termites, both pairs of wings are the same length

Sharon P, Waterproofing & Repair

We had extensive water intrusion that our inspector did not see. Thompson Brothers had to engage in grading, extensive digging, reinstallation of French drains, and install a new drainage field. The work was excellent. All personnel is polite, on time, and very professional. Highly recommend.
