Tips to Avoid Ticks This Season

Tips to Avoid Ticks This Season

Ticks love the overgrowth of bushes and trees typically found around this time of the year. And because people and pets are more likely to spend time outdoors during this season when the weather is beautiful, there is more of a chance of coming into contact with ticks. While you might think that we’ve seen the last of ticks now that the mid-summer heat has passed, it’s still wise to stay alert for ticks when you’re spending time outdoors.

There Are 14 Tick-Borne Diseases

Lyme disease isn’t the only threat that tick bites present. According to the Centers For Disease Control (CDC), there are 14 serious diseases caused by tick bites. And the bad news is that these diseases can be difficult to diagnose, and for some of the diseases, there are no diagnostic tests available yet. To make matters worse, it is difficult to cure many of the tick-borne diseases. There are plenty of reasons to avoid coming into contact with ticks!

Ways To Avoid Ticks

In addition to working with your pest control company to keep down the tick population in your yard, here are a few tips to reduce your risk of coming into contact with ticks.

  • Wear Protective Clothing such as a hat, long pants with long socks or tucked into boots, and long-sleeved shirts. The more skin you expose, the larger the landing pad for ticks.

  • Apply Pest Deterrent to your clothing, or if you use a natural tick repellent such as tea tree oil, mist onto your skin. While not always 100% effective, it has been found to deter insects.

  • Avoid Certain Areas with dense bushes and heavy tree growth. Be alert and aware of the surroundings when you are outside. If you haven’t had experience with ticks, it’s easy to believe that they really are out there waiting for you on leaves. But if you anticipate spending time in thick growing areas, taking precautions would be wise.

  • Check For Ticks throughout the day or once you are finished spending time outdoors. They especially like to burrow under waistbands and socks.

What Our Customers Say

Sharon P, Waterproofing & Repair

We had extensive water intrusion that our inspector did not see. Thompson Brothers had to engage in grading, extensive digging, reinstallation of French drains, and install a new drainage field. The work was excellent. All personnel is polite, on time, and very professional. Highly recommend.
