How to Identify and Control Wasps

How to Identify and Control Wasps Are wasps trying to make your home their home? You may notice
two types of wasps around your home, social and solitary wasps.

Yellowjackets are a common social wasp that live in the ground or near the ground. You can usually spot a yellowjacket if they are coming and going from the cracks or hollows in or near the ground. They like to build their nests in a secluded environment, like underneath your home or in hollows in the foundations of buildings.

Hornets like to build large papery nests high in trees that look like giant pine cones.

Solitary wasps such as mud daubers build their nests in eaves of homes or in the dirt of gardens. They usually build at least two or three mud flutes or tubes, one tube in which they live in and the other to store food in. They exist on insects such as flies, caterpillars and Japanese beetles. They also enjoy garbage or compost heaps for fruit and meat and are attracted to sweet-smelling flowers.

Wasps are considered beneficial insects because they work hard to minimize pest insect population, pollinate many flower species, and only sting humans when provoked or panicked.

Sharon P, Waterproofing & Repair

We had extensive water intrusion that our inspector did not see. Thompson Brothers had to engage in grading, extensive digging, reinstallation of French drains, and install a new drainage field. The work was excellent. All personnel is polite, on time, and very professional. Highly recommend.
